2025 New Years Resolutions ADHD Style

Published on 2 January 2025 at 09:00

As we step into 2025, I’m not setting myself up with a list of impossible tasks or things I "should" do. Instead, I’m focusing on resolutions that align with who I am, how I function, and what actually makes me happy. Here’s what I’ve got:

1. Work Smarter, Not Harder

I refuse to work harder—because I already do. I work hard enough, probably harder than most. This year, I’ll keep learning about myself and the strategies that work for me. I’ll focus on building sustainable habits that support me, not chasing unrealistic standards that leave me feeling like I’m not enough.

2. Feel Pride, Not Guilt

The fact that I work harder than many neurotypical people yet often feel like I’m spinning my wheels is not a reason to feel guilty or beat myself up. It’s a sign of resilience. I struggle, but I keep going—and that’s something to be proud of.

3. Happiness Now, Not "Someday"

Happiness isn’t a destination tied to achieving some future goal or meeting societal expectations. It’s not about ticking off boxes like "buying a house" or "hitting a career milestone." This year, I choose to be content with what I have and who I am, right now.

4. Take Time Out—My Way

My breaks don’t have to look like anyone else’s. If I want to sit on the floor and cuddle my dogs for ten minutes, I will. If I feel like colouring a derpy cat picture for five minutes, that’s what I’ll do. That’s my mindfulness, and it works for me.

5. Get Healthy, Not Skinny

My body—this flesh casing for my brain—needs proper nutrition to function. There are no shortcuts here. This year, I’ll remind myself: Eat some bloody vegetables, woman!

6. Spend Less on Crap

Filling my house with pointless stuff isn’t making me happy. It’s feels like there are two options:

  1. Work more → make more money → buy more crap → have less time.
  2. Spend less → need less money → have more time.

This year, I’m choosing Option 2.

And no, I’m not joining a gym, giving up chocolate, or breaking my back to get on the property ladder.

Here’s to a year of working with who I am, not against it.

Happy New Year Everyone!
